Nahal Guvta is a seasonal stream that cuts through the southern slopes of Mt. Hermon, dividing the Hermon and Shirion spurs. It begins at the upper cable car station of the Mt. Hermon ski site, continues southwestward, and empties into the Hermon (Banias) Stream. The hiking trail winds through beautiful Mediterranean woods where oaks, terebinths, Oriental plane trees, and laurel (bay leaf) grow thickly. In crevices of the shaded rock walls, beautiful ferns and hyacinths flourish in season. The trail, studded with large boulders, is challenging, so walk slowly and carefully.
Option 1—about 5 kilometers, 7–8 hours:
You can start your trip from the parking lot near the grave of Nebi Hazuri and combine a visit to this Druze holy site and the nearby memorial to the Egoz Commando Unit. Then descend to Hazuri Stream on the blue-marked trail, walking carefully between the boulders. After about one-and-a-half kilometers, you will reach a marked intersection of two trails. Choose the black one that continues to Guvta Stream and follow it to its end.
Option 2—about 4 kilometers, 5–6 hours:
Begin at the Nimrod Fortress. It is very worthwhile spending time exploring the the ruins of the huge 13th-century mountaintop stronghold (entrance fee; free for holders of Matmon card; check opening hours). From the national park’s gate, descend on the blue trail, which meets the black trail to Guvta Stream. Continue on the black trail to the end, near the Banias Nature Reserve.
